The challenge
Life expectancy is increasing
Life expectancy will continue to increase in the following years, yet unhealthy life years make up around 20% of a person's life.
New customer base
Projections for Spain estimate that, in 30 years, the percentage of the population aged 65 and over will exceed 30% and, of these, those aged 80 and over will be close to 40%.
Higher healthcare costs
Public health spending should rise from 5.9% of GDP in 2016 to 6.5% in 2070, attributable to the pure demographic effect alone.
How DKV aims to tackle these challenges
Smart Ageing
Citizens in a rapidly ageing European population are at greater risk of cognitive impairment, frailty and multiple chronic health conditions with considerable negative consequences for their independence, quality of life and for the sustainability of health and care systems.
The challenge is to foster the deployment of digital solutions that promote the support and extension of healthy and independent living for older individuals.
DKV topic to be addressed
PREVENTING ILLNESS & dependency IN THE AGeING JOURNEY
DKV is looking for smart and personalised digital solutions for sustaining and extending healthy and independent living. Specifically, DKV is seeking solutions that can prevent the physical and cognitive deterioration that may end in chronic conditions, frailty or dependency, and cognitive impairment.
Prevention of illness and dependency in the ageing journey can be achieved through the promotion of a healthy lifestyle, supporting the user in maintaining their care activities or through the personalized risk identification and early intervention to age-related health problems

The finalists
The Longevity Coaching App, from Hearts Radiant SL, is an app that measures key health biomarkers, sets quarterly goals with a coach and provides the tools and daily routine with personalised live classes to achieve the goals. While life expectancy in many countries is around 84 years, healthy life expectancy only goes up to 64. That's why the Longevity Plan strategy is key, to integrate key activities and enjoy life past 90.
Enola App is an application that creates personalised workouts in very simple steps. After downloading the app, the user selects their goals and interests, which will adjust the plan. Information on age, weight, height or sporting level will continue to be provided to tailor the plan even further, as well as information on injuries and/or health problems that need to be taken into account. Once the plan is ready, personalised training sessions will be available each day.
Memodio GmbH is an app that works for the prevention of dementia, helping people with cognitive impairment to reduce their risk of dementia. Thus, the app offers functions such as individualised therapies, improved concentration and performance, and awareness of the risk and damage that can occur. All these tools have been created to maintain a healthy brain and cope with everyday life, thus maintaining the patient's quality of life.
Five Lives is an app that "adds life to years", created by doctors from the UK's National Health Service (NHS). The project focuses on dementia prevention with a personalised cognitive health coach. To improve brain health, the app offers a quiz with health and lifestyle questions complemented by 5 cognitive tests to get a more detailed assessment of brain performance. Further on, the digital coach will help improve lifestyle with scientifically validated interventions, and progress can be tracked with a lifestyle log and monitoring of changes in brain health over time.
